GREEN ROOF
INCENTIVE SCHEME (GRIS)
Singapore aims to be a sustainable, high-density city that is clean and
green, with excellent connectivity and quality living. To enhance the
urban environment, the Singapore Sustainable Development Blueprint has
targeted to add 50 hectares of skyrise greenery by 2030.
Skyrise greening is one of the measures for tackling the adverse impact of global warming. By ading a layer of plants on the roof skin, it provides thermal insulation and cools down buildings leading to energy savings, cost and health benefits.
The city's temperature is about 3°C hotter than its surrounds and buildings have accounted for more than half of Singapore's annual energy consumption. To achieve an effective impact on the city's microclimate, NParks has introduced a pilot incentive scheme to encourage owners of existing buildings to green up their rooftops. The cash incentive offers a payout of up to 50% of the roof installation.
